Abstract

In recent years, there has been an exponential increase in the herd of goats and sheep in Brazil, with the Northeast region being the largest producer of these animals.Despite its economic and cultural importance, the production chain still faces enormous health challenges.Among the infectious diseases that affect herds of small ruminants, the contagious ecthyma, mouth or labial pustular dermatitis, as it is also known,is among the most important due to its presentation in the form of outbreaks, causing significant economic and productive losses, affecting the profitability of producers. Contagious ecthyma is an infectious viral disease caused by a virus of the genus Parapoxvirus, belonging to the Poxviridae family, which affects goats and sheep of all ages and with high morbidity. It can occur in 100% of the herd during outbreaks. It is more prevalent in young animals, affects productive performance, causes weight loss, and can lead to death.is review will address its etiopathogenesis, new perspectives for diagnosis, treatments, and prophylaxis, and the possibility of developing new, more effective vaccines to reduce the incidence and damage caused by this condition.
