Abstract

Gastrointestinal system diseases are the primary cause of clinical-surgical problems in cattle. Clinical treatment often does not show satisfactory results, requiring surgical intervention. Moreover, abdominal surgical exploration is frequently required when the diagnosis cannot be confirmed through clinical examination and complementary tests. Therefore, it is essential for bovine practitioners to deeply understand the anatomy and surgical techniques for treating gastrointestinal disorders in cattle. These techniques primarily include rumenotomy, surgeries to correct abomasum displacement, and, less frequently, intestinal surgeries. This literature review aims to describe the surgical approaches to the abdominal cavity of cattle and the main surgeries performed on the digestive tract organs located therein, specifically the rumen-reticulum, abomasum, and intestines.

Keywords: abomasum displacement, cecal dilation, rumenostomy, rumenotomy, digestive system.
